Event with Jewish Women's Aid

Target Audience: Everyone in the community

Description: This was a Zoom event, as at the time we were limiting in-person events. The volunteer from JWA spoke for around 40 minutes about different issues surrounding domestic abuse and then opened up for questions.

Aim: To educate and inform the community about issues of domestic violence in the Jewish community, how we can spot this and what to do in different situations.

Why was it a success? It was a success because it is a vitally important subject and it is important that we ensure everyone is educated about this. The leader giving the address was really good, spoke very clearly, concisely and with great sympathy which is vital for such a delicate subject.

Advice for communities looking to replicate: It would be better in person, and also think communities need to work hard to ensure people are aware this is not just an event for woman but for everyone.

Book club with Nechama

Target audience: Women â€‹

Description: Run by Rebbetzen Nechama Davis, the book club keeps women connected during COVID. It is a virtual book club run on zoom where they read the book together. The book is a Jewish book in English, as opposed to general fiction

AimTo keep women connected whilst providing some education too

Why was this initiative a success? Very positive feedback incl.:

"I never realised when we started this that I’d still be involved at the end of the year. Having a regular zoom commitment has been like an oasis in the desert which has been this year. It has broken the monotony of just going to work and being at home without the special luxuries of holidays, entertainment, time with friends and family"

Advice for communities looking to replicate: Choose the book wisely, making sure there are relevant discussion points

Pamper Party

Target Audience: The ladies in the community

Description: Tova Bamberg, a Body Shop at Home consultant, did a demonstration with products and there were products to sample.

Aim: To get women to come and enjoy an afternoon testing the Body Shop products.

Why was it a success? It was engaging and entertaining with tea. The ladies loved trying the products and spending the afternoon with friends at shul. We also gave some lemon hand sanitiser with our Rosh Chodesh Ladies sticker, something they can takeaway with them and always remember our event.

Advice for communities looking to replicate: Pampering is something most women love so having these products that they can order is something so lovely.

Ladies Night at the KLP Pub

Target Audience: Women aged 18+

Description: On Chol HaMoed Pesach (hence KLP pub), £3 entrance then free drinks (cocktails, wine and soft drinks) and nibbles (crisps, cake and fruit) for the whole night, pool table, table football, air hockey, silent disco with three channels playing different styles of music.

Aim: To provide a space for women to socialise and build relationships.

Why was it a success? People enjoyed somewhere they could go and spend time with friends, following the stress of preparing for Pesach.

Advice for communities looking to replicate: It's expensive to hire the pub games (pool, air hockey, table football) - we were lucky that the shul had bought these for the youth in the past, so we could use them. If your shul hasn't got them, it's worthwhile investing in them. The silent disco was very easy to run ourselves - hand out the headphones to people as some people enjoyed just listening and not necessarily dancing.
