Safeguarding

Safeguarding (Child and Vulnerable Adult Protection)

Within the United Synagogue we place the utmost importance on safeguarding.

Please read our Safeguarding Policies for Children and for Adults at Risk: www.theus.org.uk/safeguarding-children and  www.theus.org.uk/safeguarding-adults

Each synagogue must have a Community Safeguarding Coordinator

All United Synagogue representatives have a responsibility to:

  • Provide a safe environment in which children and adults can engage in Judaism

  • Ensure all policies and procedures related to safeguarding are implemented, with support from the US Central Team

  • Ensure all representatives have safeguarding training appropriate to their role

  • Maintain an attitude of ‘it could happen here’ where safeguarding is concerned, and always act in the best interests of the child or adult at risk

  • Recognise and identify children and adults who may be in need of extra help, who are experiencing harm or likely to experience harm or abuse

  • Refer all safeguarding concerns to the US Central Safeguarding Team, who will make external referrals as needed and work with you to manage concerns in your community

  • Provide help and support for children and adults at risk, with guidance and support from the US Central Team

Recruitment of US representatives – staff and volunteers

  • All recruitment of paid staff must be done in conjunction with the HR department, following US procedures. This includes appropriate reference and DBS checks. Any staff member who brings somebody into work without the necessary processes in place will be subject to a disciplinary investigation

  • All volunteers who work with children or adults at risk must have a DBS check and safeguarding training before they begin their role. Training is essential for some roles. If you are unsure as to what is required for a particular role, please contact the Head of Chesed and Volunteering [add link to Sharon].

For any safeguarding concerns or questions, please contact safeguarding@theus.org.uk or 020 3758 8550. The US Head of Safeguarding is Claudia Kitsberg.
